Oribi Gorge, KwaZulu-Natal – A new eco-tourism initiative aimed at bolstering conservation efforts and stimulating local employment has been officially launched in the Oribi Gorge region. The project, a collaborative effort between local government, environmental organisations, and community leaders, seeks to leverage the area's natural beauty and biodiversity to create sustainable economic opportunities for residents. The initiative focuses on developing new eco-friendly trails, guided wildlife tours, and community-based accommodation options. Training programmes will be implemented to equip local residents with skills in hospitality, guiding, and environmental management, ensuring that the benefits of increased tourism directly impact the surrounding communities. "This initiative represents a significant step forward for Oribi Gorge," stated Ms. Nandi Mkhize, Ward Councillor for the area. "We are not just attracting tourists; we are investing in our people and the long-term health of our environment. The balance between conservation and economic growth is paramount." A key component of the project involves the rehabilitation of degraded areas within the gorge and the establishment of a dedicated anti-poaching unit. Funds generated from the eco-tourism activities will be reinvested into these conservation efforts, creating a self-sustaining model. Mr. Sipho Dlamini, a long-time resident and community elder, expressed optimism about the project's potential. "For too long, our young people have had to leave Oribi Gorge to find work. This initiative offers them a future right here at home, while also protecting the natural heritage we all cherish." The launch event, held at a newly established eco-lodge within the gorge, was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs. Speakers highlighted the unique biodiversity of Oribi Gorge, which is home to a diverse array of plant and animal life, making it an ideal location for responsible eco-tourism. The initiative is expected to attract both domestic and international visitors, contributing to the broader economic recovery of the KZN South Coast region.
