Ugu District Municipality is currently grappling with a severe water crisis, leaving thousands of residents across the KZN South Coast without a reliable water supply. The crisis is attributed to a confluence of deteriorating infrastructure and persistent drought conditions, exacerbating an already fragile water network. Reports from numerous communities indicate prolonged periods without water, impacting daily life and public health. The municipality's water infrastructure, much of which dates back several decades, has been identified as a primary contributor to the ongoing issues. Frequent pipe bursts, pump station failures, and operational inefficiencies plague the system. Mr. Sipho Dlamini, a spokesperson for the Ugu District Municipality, acknowledged the challenges. "We are acutely aware of the distress this situation is causing our communities," he stated. "Our teams are working tirelessly to address the numerous infrastructure failures, but the scale of the problem requires significant investment and long-term solutions." He further elaborated on the impact of the current drought, noting that dam levels are critically low, placing additional strain on water treatment and distribution. Residents have expressed growing frustration over the intermittent and often non-existent water supply. Mrs. Nontobeko Mkhize, a resident of Port Shepstone, described the daily struggle. "We have been without water for days on end, sometimes weeks. How are we supposed to cook, clean, or maintain basic hygiene? This is not a sustainable way to live." Similar sentiments were echoed by residents in Margate and Scottburgh, highlighting the widespread nature of the crisis. The lack of consistent communication from the municipality regarding water restoration schedules has also been a point of contention. In response to the escalating crisis, the municipality has initiated emergency measures, including the deployment of water tankers to affected areas. However, the demand often far outweighs the supply, leading to long queues and insufficient provision. Discussions are reportedly underway with provincial and national government departments to secure additional funding for infrastructure upgrades and drought relief initiatives. The long-term sustainability of water supply in the Ugu District remains a critical concern, necessitating a comprehensive and urgent intervention to avert further humanitarian and economic impact.
